An Historic Day: The End of Christmas and a Chat with Jelsa’s new Tourist Board Director

The last time I blogged about having a coffee on the main square in Jelsa, it was one of the top stories of the day all over Croatia, with 4,800 Facebook likes on one portal alone, as well as being the major conversation point for the following week in Jelsa and beyond. Nice to know that a few people follow our blogs…

I doubt we will reach those dizzy heights this time, but there is something special about midday cold ones in the winter sun with the bura blowing. Only the true diehards tend to sit outside, and it was left to myself and young Vivian to show the world there is life in Jelsa in winter.

January 18, and young Viv was just commenting on the fact that Advent in Jelsa seemed to be going on longer than most when two vehicles rocked up in a pincer movement, surrounding the Christmas tree, the last remnants of this year’s Christmas decorations whose media coverage will live long in the memory.

Camera at the ready, the Eco Hvar president captured the dismantling of the tree, and it was gone in a few minutes.

The cafe door opened and out popped famous winemaker Ivo Dubokovic who was just on his way to a job interview for the position of Jelsa Tourist Board director. One coffee later, or was it two, and Ivo was back, joining us ouside for a coffee and a chat about his interview.

He was kind enough to share his presentation with us, and there were some VERY interesting ideas contained therein. After years of disappointment, I was starting to get excited about tourism in Jelsa again, and its possibility, even more so when I heard later that day that young Dubokovic had got the job

Congratulations and good luck – there are some big challenges ahead. And Total Hvar wonders if finally it will be third time lucky after more than four years anf two tourist board directors – perhaps the opportunity of a meaningful conversation with a tourist board director of Jelsa?
