With so much uncertainty about the realities of EU membership, an Englishman’s vineyard in Stari Grad comes under official scrutiny.
The local authorities in Stari Grad do a fantastic job at informing people about what is going on not only in their area, but on the island as a whole, and they are to be congratulated on the excellent work they do on the official site. Updated several times a day, I have been impressed at how well they inform people not only of events, but policy changes and items of general interest.
It is not a website one refers to when looking for humour, but I burst out laughing yesterday when I read this wonderful piece about the Croft Brothers Vineyard.
According to the site, foreigners will not be allowed to buy agricultural land for seven years after EU entry, and possibly three more years after that, and yet here was an Englishman in the heart of Stari Grad who not only had a vineyard, but a sign on the gate that was written in English, and not Croatian. And all this before EU entry!
Enter Tezza, aka Captain Brandy, long-term Stari Grad resident and proud father of the Croft brothers. He paid for the land a few years ago, but is not allowed to own it, so the Croft Brothers estate is in the ownership of a Croatian friend.
We looking forward to trying the future award-winning Croft Brothers Plavac Mali, and hope it will be before foreigners are allowed to buy agricultural land…
