Some people think I am a little rude when I see them the day after first meeting them and seemingly ignore them. It is nothing personal, I just have the world’s worst memory for faces, and it is constantly getting me into trouble. I am therefore always a little envious of people who can not only recognise faces, but put experiences to those faces which happened some time ago.
People like Denis from Dalmatino.
I was having a drink with a very nice Scottish couple who are looking to start a culinary sailing business next summer on Hvar. One is a trained chef, and the couple are confirmed foodies who have been enjoying the Hvar Town food scene for five years. I asked them which were their favourite restaurants in the town. The answer was quick in coming.
“Luna was our first love, a lovely restaurant, but we also love Dalmatino. Excellent menu, superb service and very personal attention.” It is something I have been hearing again and again this summer, both from guests who have been and the hundreds of positive TripAdvisor comments.
When I met owner Denis earlier this year, he had been telling me about his experiences running the restaurant, and we came to the issue of the three bad reviews he had received. Even though one was more than two years ago, he could vividly recall the guests, what they ate and what the complaint was. I was super impressed, but it seems that this was not a one-off, as my new foodie friends confirmed.
“We were there again recently, the first time since May, and the owner greeted us, saying how nice it it was to see us again. We were sure he would not remember us from our previous visit, but on the contrary, he told us that we had been there in May and had been talking about working with a boat.”
How do people do that? I am so envious. Of course, I guess Denis’ job is made a little easier by the fact that the food and service are exceptional, and so the same faces keep on coming back again and again. I guess perhaps that even I might start recognising the regular repeat faces at Dalmatino if I got a job there as a waiter.
