FKK Hvar: Where You Can Take Your Clothes Off at the Beach

Total Croatia News

A lot of people seem to be searching for the same information – where to go au naturel on Hvar.

Coming from Manchester, I did not grow up with a tradition of naturism which – given the unattractive shapes of the modern British body – is probably a good thing. The approach to naturism is one cultural difference between Dalmatia and the UK, and Hvar is among the top naturist or FKK (from the German translation of Free Body Culture) destinations in Croatia.

We get a LOT of Google searches for FKK Hvar. For those looking for naughty pictures, this website tends to disappoint, just as the many people looking for an escort girl or prostitute on Hvar tend to be disappointed by the Total Hvar links offered up by Google (click on the two links to find out why).

But if you are looking for an FKK spot on Hvar, you have plenty of choice, and naturist tourism is an important part of the island’s offer. CNN cemented this in 2011, when it named the Pakleni Island of Jerolim as its top naturist beach in the world, and the island has long been popular with naturists, as well as offering a discreet option for the gay community. While most people head to Amo Beach which is opposite Hvar Town, the real treasure is on the other side of the island – simply walk through the woods about 100m to the left of Amo, and discover one of the hidden gems of Dalmatia – Mare’s place on Kordovon Bay, one of the most chilled and accepting places I have come across in a while. Naturist, prudes, gay naturists, tourists in regular swimsuits, the mix is something unique on the island, and the relaxed nature of the hosts adds to its magical charm. Here was my first visit last year

FKK camping is big business, and nowhere does it better than Kamp Nudist in Vrboska, which is the island’s premier naturist camping spot. Discreetly hidden through the pine trees, the camp is located alongside a naturist beach, a short walk through the woods from the poular Soline Beach. Another very popular campsite for FKK tourism is Mlaska near Sucuraj, which is divided into regular and FKK camping.

There are other FKK spots which are renowned, including the island of Zecevo near Jelsa, which was responsible for the establishment of the Belgian colony in Vrisnik 30 years ago, but the reality is that Hvar has so many coves and small bays away from the crowds, that you can simply pick your spot and commune with nature. And if you are not into naturism and find a nice quiet spot away from the crowds, don’t be surprised to find you are sharing the bay with a naked harpoon-wielding goddess, as happened to one guest a couple of years ago, whose subsequent story won The Guardian’s Best Short Story.
