I want to tell you a secret, something not many people know.
Although Hvar is officially the sunniest island in Europe, it does – on occasion – rain. Please don’t tell the tourists…
Fortunately for the summer beach tourism, most of the rainfall comes in the winter months, leaving the locals to bear the brunt of it. It is what keeps our island so green, contributes to the fabulous wines, olive oils and other natural goodness for which Hvar is rightly famed.
But when it rains heavily, and Mum is away singing in Samobor, and it is a 9 year-old’s birthday, just what is there to do on the island of Hvar on cold mid-October day in the rain.
Hotel Adriana! With the actual birthday party superbly organised by Mum the previous weekend, my task was to come up with something fun for two little monkeys. Options in October in the rain were limited, but I knew the power of a heated swimming pool would be attraction enough. And so off we headed to the seawater pool on the 4th floor of Hotel Adriana, Hvar’s premier hotel. A very pleasant 27.5 degree pool was awaiting us, and there was nobody to share with. Kid heaven…
The pool aside, Adriana also has a quality wellness offer, and although I have not tried the Thai massages personally, I hear good things. There are packages available for non-residents.
Of course, this being Hvar, the rain could not last long, and just a few minutes after entering the pool, Hvar’s famous sunshine reappeared and we joined other guests sunbathing outside. In mid-October!
And the views from the sunloungers were not too shabby.
This being a birthday, it would have been rude to leave without having a drink at what, for some, is the finest view in all Hvar Town. It certainly impressed two young ladies, almost as much as the Coke Zero.
Whatever the weather, there is no denying that the Top Bar is a stunning location, and if you are looking to break up the day, there are worse things to do that pop into Top Bar for a drink, or even a bite to eat.
