2018 promises to be quite a year for the island of Hvar.
Voting will begin soon for the best destination in Europe 2018, with Hvar representing Croatia, and with a very strong potential to win. One has only to look at the success of Advent in Zagreb, Best Christmas Market in Europe for three years in a row to see how the positive PR turns into tourism bucks – a fabulous half a billion kuna from Advent in Zagreb this time around.
Should Hvar win – and the results will be known in February – it will be the perfect platform to welcome Hvar’s very special birthday in May – 150 years of the birth of organised tourism in Europe with the founding of the Hvar Health Society in 1868.
May is always a great time to visit the island, with great weather, all businesses open and lower prices, cheaper flights and much fewer tourists. If you are looking for a tip for season 2018 on the best time to visit, take in the dates May 10-15, which is when the main 150 celebrations will begin. May 10 is the Feast of St. Prosper, patron saint of Hvar Town and what was once the unofficial opening of the tourist season (which is now much longer than a few years ago), and May 15 is the 150 anniversary date. There will be a full programme of events to celebrate this special piece of history.
It wil be a big year for leading hotel group, Suncani Hvar Hotels, as well.
