When we say there are five things that you don’t know about Hvar, there is always someone who knows something they shouldn’t, but we are confident that the following will be 100% new to 90% of readers. Here we go…

1. The island of Hvar was for sale in 1932, according to a report in the New York Times. To get the full story, you need to be richer than us and invest $3.95 – please feel free to share.

2. If you give birth on a Jadrolinija ferry from Hvar, your child will travel free on the ferries for life. A hard one to plan, but the savings do add up.

3. ‘Hvar’ means ‘where’ in Icelandic. Not really a fact you can impress your mates with down the pub, but useful to know when following a Twitter feed.

4. The biggest concentration of postmen on Hvar is in Jelsa – 6. Of the 15 delivery merchants on the island, 3 operate from Hvar Town, 4 from Stari Grad, 1 from Sucuraj and the other from Zastrazisce. Jelsa’s abundance is due to commitments through the Pitve tunnel.

5. Hvar is rich in stone tradition, even more so in regional dialects. Both come together in the useless fact that there are eight different dialect words for ‘chisel’ on Hvar, the big joke being one can’t buy a chisel for love nor money.
