Paiz Times: Yellow Pages of History

Special edition for the occasion of the 2400th anniversary of the town of Stari Grad as a dedication to life on the island of Hvar

Introduction

Island as a Method of Living/ Living the Island Way/Island as a Way of Living

Starting this introduction has beenas difficult as deciding on the first bite at a smorgasbord. So let us pick the safe option of a cold starter and recommend this island way of living to everyone. In the style of a cruel adage, whereby a hungry man is taught to fish for himself rather than being fed once.

But on this island it is possible to catch (hold of) something. Akin to a sensual silhouette that at one of its many beaches snagged in your mind, Hvar lengthened forth precisely where nature was especially generous in all kinds of fruits, and where all the roads led to the Far East and its formidable riches. Indeed an erotic allure that could not have been resisted by a whole series of civilizations, rulers and their cultures. Some of them gave more and built, others mostly plundered, leaving wasteland in their wake. A whole series nonetheless, which, leading to you with this newspaper in hand, would have witnessed the ancient Indo-Europeans, Illyrians, Romans, Slavs, Turks, the French, the Germans, Italians and us Croatians, who are now trying to bring you into this story.

Some false conclusions we of course love and pompously take for granted. And so, let it be known that this moment in time is by no means the best moment in the history of the island. To find out more on this, please turn to our website www.hvarislandconsierge.com, an initiative, the motto of which — “Alternative Tourist Board and the Centre for the Development of the Island” — provides sufficient latitude to meet your every, yes, tourist need, while also assist you in investing or kick-starting a life on Hvar.

We are particularly grateful to the beloved Paiz, and this modest hotchpotch of news from its 2400 years of history is an attempt, however small, in the style of contemporary gossip columns, to ridicule with shallow journalism in the same way that Paiz once laughed at all our silly cares, the current existential crisis and the absence of meaning. There are still places that can teach one how to (better) live and you are one of the lucky ones for being in precisely one such place.

Drop in before you get going; leave us a message before you depart. And pomalooo – easy…
