Continuing our look at the Croatian nominee for Best European Destination 2017, number 11 in our 42 pictures of Stari Grad.
Hvar Town has the Pakleni Islands as the idyllic getaway from the crowds in town, and Stari Grad too has a wonderful treasure – the Kabal Peninsula looks stunning from the air – see above – and it is a natural paradise on the ground, with just two small villages on the entire peninsula.
The rest is given over to nature and some truly spectacular – and deserted – bays and coves. There are a few houses here and there – you may bump into famous ER doctor Goran Visnjic in his holiday for example – but by and large the peninsula is deserted.
There is the occasional surprise though – travel the 12km to the top of the peninsula to ‘Tito’s Caves’ – concrete tunnels guarding the entrance to the Stari Grad canal. A weird attraction, and one at odds with its natural surroundings, but take a bottle of wine and go as the sun sets – the sunsets are truly amazing.
