Hvar tradition at its very best this Saturday in the village of wine, Svirce. Zoga Falo, Bogdanusa, Klapa and the first public memory of a hero from 500 years ago.
Bravo to the Hvar Wine Association.
Not only for the outstanding evening in Vrboska the other night (a report of which I understand will be on Dobro Jutro Hrvatska on national television tomorrow morning – read about it here, a magical evening), but also because Saturday night will be (I think) the first marking of a very important anniversary – 500 years of the end of the Great Rebellion, led by Matej Ivanic. Learn more about it here.
Despite it being a significant Hvar birthday, I have not come across any major events to commemorate it in the tourist board programmes for the season, and so it was nice to learn that there will be an exbihition of Matej Ivanic and the rebellion organised by the Hvar Wine Association at their next wine tasting in Svirce on Saturday.
The wine tasting and music starts at 21:00, and the heroes of Vrboska will be presenting their bogdanusa wines, the indigenous white from Hvar which translates as ‘a gift from God’. Caric, PZ Svirce, Zlatan Otok, Dubokovic and Tomic will also be joined by Marjan from Pitve for the event.
But try and get there at 19:00 on the main square of Svirce high up in the village, for there will be a rare game of zoga falo, a traditional Dalmatian sport with a very vague resemblence to baseball, which exists to this day in very few places, one of which is Svirce.
