Life as a Boy on Hvar in 1951

Total Croatia News

One of the best things about full-time living on Hvar is the natural start to life one can give to one’s kids. There can be few places in the world which offer such a safe and healthy environment for the little ones.

Coming from that famous British coastal resort of Manchester, I learned to swim at the age of 29, and I looked on with joy (and a little envy) at my little dolphins who were already better swimmers than me at the age of three. My vegetables were always grown in supermarkets, and the affinity the kids have to the field and nature is one of the island’s greatest gifts to children, especially in the modern era.

Technology and ‘progress’ is coming even to Hvar, and it will become harder to retain young interest in natural things, as the lure of iPads and smartphones permeates, and so it was a little more envy that I enjoyed this wonderful photo of some Hvar boys back in 1951, enjoying a boating trip (no doubt with a little fishing) and singing accompanied by the accordian.

Truly the Mediterranean Childhood as It Once Was.
