Hvar is glorious at the moment, and if you thought that the Adriatic was just for summer swimming, think again, especially if you are Scottish…
Some great photos to accompany this blog from our roving Scottish Vrbanj correspondent, Rhona Crosbie, who offers a lovely snapshot of life on Hvar in November – from the olives to the sea. Thanks Rhona!
November is beautiful on Hvar. Since the beginning of the month the weather has been very settled, warm and sunny , hardly any wind and perfect for olive picking and swimming. This is the start of our forth winter living here full time. We feel we are getting into the rhythm of life here. In the morning we’ve been helping Frankie Dubokovich pick his family’s olives, the oil from these olives will be used at Dvor Dubokovic in Pitve next year. If you are visiting the island make sure you pay them a visit.
After a few hours picking, including a lunch break, the best way to relax the muscles that you discover you didn’t know you had is by plunging into the still moderately warm Adriatic Sea.
One of the important things is to find a swimming spot that is in the sun. The sun is much lower in the sky and disappears behind Sv Nikola earlier each day. Soline is the best place and at this time of year virtually deserted. The only shadow in the sky is when the European Coastal Airlines flight passed over as it lands in Jelsa.
Sunday is an off day from the picking so we go through the tunnel to Zavala. On the south side the sun goes down over the sea so a longer day sunbathing and swimming is possible.
The weather is predicted to be good for another 10 days so more swimming planned.
