A rather enjoyable meal in the back streets of Jelsa old town.
There has been a reduced service from Total Hvar in recent days, due mostly to a desire to enjoy the last few days of September in the company of several friends who happen to be visiting from different parts of the world. All former real estate clients, we have had visitors from the UK, Norway and the Caribbean staying in their various holiday homes, and it has been a fun week accompanying them to their various favourite eateries.
We have vegetarian friends who make at least one visit per trip to the excellent Pelago restaurant in Jelsa in the heart of the old town close to Villa Verde and the pretty square of St. John. Vegetarian options are somewhat limited on the island, and they have found that for them, Pelago offers great pizza and salads, while host Ivo always gives them a warm welcome.
And even though I had not eaten at the restaurant for almost a year, there was no question what I was going to have.
“Your usual Big Mama?” asked Ivo. The Pelago Big Mama is one of the best steaks on the island.
The restaurant was fairly busy but the table behind quickly filled up with some familiar faces from the local community, as well as one I recognised from somewhere but could not place. Former Croatian presidential candidate Andrija Hebrang, who was in town for a book promotion.
A very pleasant evening, and a reminder once more of the excellent eateries to be found away from the water in the old towns of the island.
