Restaurants in Hvar Town on a Budget: Five Great Options

Total Croatia News

Hvar Town can be a very expensive place to eat, but it does not have to be. Five quality options for those on a budget.

Hvar Town has a repuation for being very expensive, expecially when it comes to restaurants, which it can be. This is the town where you can spend more than 100,000 euro on a 6 litre bottle of one of the world’s most exclusive Champagnes, for example.

But it does not have to be. One of the strengths of Hvar as a destination is that there is something for everyone. It is a town where the backpacker can rub shoulders with the celebrities, and where everyone can find his own level of accommodation and level of dining experience. Here are five great value places to eat in Hvar Town, where you can fill up without emptying your wallet.

1. Villa Dinka

Overlooking Hotel Amfora’s pool and with a cool breeze and sea view, it is worth making the short climb to Villa Dinka (there is a path just before the hotel) for the ambience alone. But the pizzas are excellent, and start at under 40 kuna. Catch them on a day when they are roasting lamb on the spit for an extra treat.

2. Bistro Alviž

Probably the most jovial of all Hvar’s restauranteurs, Vjekoslav from Bistro Alviž (just opposite the bus station close to the car park) has built up a very dedicated following over the years, with a combination of warm welcome, excellent service and quality food delivered at reasonable prices. A full Dalmatian menu is on offer, or check out the range of pizzas, again in the sub-40 kuna bracket.

3. Marinero

Fish plays a major role in the Hvar gastronomic scene, and prices can be high. There is no doubting the quality however, and one place to go for a fish extravaganza on a budget is Marinero (tucked away in a pretty square near St. Mark’s Church just off the main waterfront between Cafe Sidro and Hotel Adriana). The tuna steaks are probably the best value in town, delivered with frightening efficiency which produces everything itself, from the organic vegetables to the range of seafood via its fish business.

4. Mizarola

Another of Hvar’s smiliest welcomes, host Marino has built up a solid following of both locals and visitors in this excellent eatery on the main square in Hvar Town. Perfect location to watch the  summer go by, and with a delicious menu and excellent prices. If you want to fill up for two days, invest 55 kuna in one of the lasagnes – 500g of heaven.

5. Bistro For

Tucked away in the back streets close to Hotel Riva on the exclusive waterfront, For is a gem of a find for people wanting to escape the crowds and heat, and eat well on a smaller budget. Daily 3-course menus for 50-60 kuna available.
