One of the first things that struck me when I first moved to Hvar was how few animals there seemed to be on the island. Donkeys seemed to be in plentiful supply, there was the occasional sheep, and the majestic horses of Humac were always a treat. But not much else. And then…
Driving home from Sucuraj at midnight one summer’s night, I discovered that wild boar real did roam free on the island, as one smashed into the side of my car, and the sound of twisting metal indicated that it probably wasn’t such a good meeting for the boar. I wanted to get out and see if I could help, but the sight of his two brothers behind dissuaded me.
But while the presence of wild boar is known, how many people have come across this beauty, a delighful surprise for one young lady on a family boat trip north of Hvar recently. This island continues to surprise, and this lovely creature can be found two bays along from Hotel Sirena outside of Hvar Town in a bay called Vela Garcka.
