Two of the most iconic events in central Hvar take place this weekend, very different in nature, but with the same end result – quite a party!
One of the world’s most challenging swims takes place tomorrow morning in the harbour of Stari Grad, as the 40th Faros Marathon takes place, a 16km swim to the tip of Kabal Peninsula and back which attracts some of the world’s top swimmers each year, with this year’s event including 74 year-old ‘King of the English Channel’, Michael Read.
The race takes place in the morning at 08:00, but the party continues long into the night. I don’t have details of the programme and there is nothing on the Stari Grad Tourist Board wesbite, but presumably they will have some info in the office. Check out the 2013 race in the video below.
And the weekend that many look forward to the most in Jelsa is about to begin – Festa Vina, or the Jelsa Wine Festival. From donkey races and tug o’war, to Hvar Wine Association tastings and indigenous fare, this one is for all the family, with something for everyone, and don’t expect to get too much sleep in the next couple of days… A fun weekend in store for the two biggest towns in the centre of the island.
