Jodie Foster visited Hvar in 1978. Some pictures, and the inside story…
(all photos copyright of Jadran Lazić)
A few months ago, we were sent some pictures of a young Jodie Foster on holiday on Hvar, and we wrote a blog about it. According to the source, some famous photographer had taken the pictures, which had resurfaced in a Japanese magazine.
Last week, I went to harvest lavender with the famous photographer on top of the island at 6am.
Early morning coffee with Jadran Lazić today was even more fascinating at The Office, for as well as his stories, he brought a rather interest book as a gift, which contained some of the celebrity photographs that comprised his career. Out came the stories of Brezhnev, Abu Abbas and the film stars from Marlon Brando and Paul Newman, to Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren.
And Jodie Foster.
Jadran and Jodie became friends in Paris in 1978, and when he had to return to Yugoslavia to renew his passport, she decided to come on holiday to Split and Hvar with her mother. They stayed in what is now the presidential villa in Hvar Town for a few days.
It was a memorable time for Foster, who described Hvar as the most beautiful place in the world. An interesting aside was the khaki uniform in which Foster was photographed had actually belonged to Lazić (see the photo above) and he had given it to her.
Jodie Foster aside, the 156-page book is packed with stunning celebrity photos. It is no longer in print, having been produced for a photo exhibition tour of Croatia in 2007, but I will be happy to show my signed copy to anyone who wants to see it at The Office.
A fascinating morning, with some great stories, some of which we will be retelling over the coming weeks. To learn more about Jadran Lazić and his work, www.jadranlazic.net
