The peak season is over, the main nightclubs closed, and Hvar Town has entered what many consider to be the finest time to visit the island – late September and October.

Given that this is the sunniest island in Europe, the chances of late season sun are above average, and the weather in September and October has been glorious in recent years.

Another reason why Autumn is a great time to visit is that locals are a lot more relaxed. After another stressful summer with thousands of tourists, the bulk of the money has been made, and everyone has a little more time to chat and joke with their guests. The makeup of tourists also changes someone. Those here for the party tend to time their visit with the vibrant summer nightlife, and the shoulder season months tend to attract a different crowd – older tourists interested in the culture, food and wine and cooler temperatures (although the water is still excellent for swimming). It is also a time of year when more adventure tourists visit, with Hvar’s expanding adventure tourism offer, both in terms of activities and events. There is a subtle change in the makeup of the traffic on the island’s roads, as summer scooter rentals give way to groups of cyclists. Last December, one of the world’s top cycling teams, Bahrain Merida, condcucted their winter training on Hvar, with their base at Suncani Hvar’s Pharos bay hill hotel.

As an extra incentive to encourage visitors at this glorious time of year, Suncani Hvar Hotels is offering late season discounts on its main hotels until the end of October. Coming as a family? Hotel Amfora Grand Resort is the island’s biggest hotel, famous for its magnificent views and cascading swimming pools in front of the hotel. And if you are looking or a little waterfront pampering, you will not find many better locations or services than the wellness choices at Bonj les Banj in front of Amfora, complete with private waterfront cabins. The Never Ending Summer offer includes 10% off for a minimum 2 night stay until October 30.

Hvar has recorded many firsts in its tourism history – did you know that organised tourism in Europe originated here, exactly 150 years ago, for example? – including one of its latest claims to fame – the first millennial hotel in Croatia, which opened 3 years ago, as the 2-star Hotel Pharos was completely overhauled into a 4-star quality modern hotel very much for the younger crowd. Superbly located in a residential area in a wealth of pine trees and yet just a couple of minutes from the waterfront, it offers a lot more space and calm for such a centrally located hotel. This is where the serious bikers such as Bahrain Merida can take advantage of the facilities of this fully equipped bike hotel. Never Ending Summer discount – 10% for 2 or more nights until October 30.

For style and top location, it is hard to beat the best hotel on the island, Adriana. The views from its legendary Top Bar are among the best on the planet, taking in a vista which includes the Spanish Fortress, main square, the oldest public theatre in Europe, the luxury Hvar riva and several of the Pakleni Islands. No wonder the cocktails at Top Bar are popular with a view like that. The biggest secret at Adriana for me is the breakfast on the ground floor, a lovely leisurely buffet affair from 07:00 to 11:00 (open to non-residents) with one of the best terraces in the town. Close enough to the water to catch the lapping of waves, and ideally place to watch all the harbour action, from fishing boats and kayaks, to catamarans and superyachts. And if you are looking for a little wellness, look no further than the newly revamped, award-winning Sensori Spa. Never Ending Summer discount – 10% for three nights until December 31. And if you are feeling particularly extravagent why not check out the newly-renovated penthouse suites on the top floor for sheer indulgence.

Location, location, location – if you want to be in the heart of the action, it is hard to beat the centre of Hvar’s exclusive waterfront, which is where Hotel Riva is located. Hvar’s most stylish hotel attracts a stylish crowd, and there are few better people-watching spots in Dalmatia than the comfortable seating over breakfast, lunch, dinner or a cocktail or two in front of Riva. Everything is close, and everything is stylish. Never Ending Summer discount – 10% for minimum three-night stay until October 6.
