20th Days of Latinsko Idro Kicks Off Today

Total Croatia News

This year, Latinsko Idro Regatta celebrates its twentieth birthday with many events happening this month on Murter island.

This year’s twentieth Days of Latinsko Idro kicks off this Friday, September 8, with the Holy Mass in Gradina at 11 A.M, followed by rowing regattas: “small” one at 5 P.M., female at 5.30 P.M. and male at 6.30 P.M. and the entertainment programme at Rudina from 8.30 P.M, reports Pomorac.net on September 8, 2017.

The event is organised under the auspices of the president of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar Kitarović.

This regatta is the first and oldest regatta of traditional ships, which is held every year, on the occasion of the feast of St. Mihovil, the patron saint of the Murter Parish. The Latinsko Idro regatta (meaning lateen sail) is the competition of traditional boats with lateen sails – a triangular sail set on a long yard mounted at an angle on the mast, the earliest fore-and-aft sail. Recently, on September 3, Burtiž regatta dedicated to the lateen sails took place on Prvić island. Read more about it here.

The Latinsko Idro Association has prepared a rich programme which starts today and lasts until the day of the regatta, which is held on Sunday, October 1st, first Sunday after the Feast of patron saint St. Mihovil, which this year falls on September 29. On the 13th and 14th of September, the sailing on traditional boats with lateen sails will be directed to two routes: one to Žut island where Feast of the Cross will be celebrated on September 14. The other route will lead to Stari Grad on Hvar, where the Murter Islanders will participate in the festival Dani U Vali.

The Feast of St. Mihovil starts on Friday 29th of September with a procession at 10.45, followed by Mass in St. Mihovil Church, the Malo Latinsko Idro regatta at 4 P.M., the solemn session of the Municipal Council with the concert of Dalmatino group at 6 P.M. and in the evening the exhibition of the Lateen Sails in the Mediterranean by the author of the Linguistic Mediterranean Atlas at the Murter’s library/reading room at 8 P.M.
