The first area to be treated is part of the Mosor mountain, which was devastated in last year’s fires.
The first in a series of afforestation actions, which are part of the volunteer drive for the afforestation of the fire-devastated areas of Dalmatia called “Boranka”, has been completed over the weekend. The area included part of the Mosor mountain which was hit hard by last year’s fires. The drive included over 300 volunteers from all parts of Croatia, reports Večernji List on October 1, 2018.
The organizers are the Association of Scouts of Croatia and the Split Scout Union. In addition to scouts and citizens from Split and its surroundings, the project included scouts from Vinkovci, Đakovačka Satnica, Otok, Bjelovar, Varaždin and Čakovec.
The planting drives will take place every Saturday over the next two months at sites around Split and Solin. More than 2,500 volunteers from all over Croatia have already applied to take part.
The volunteers planted over 3,000 new seedlings and about a kilogram of the black ash seeds. Given the high temperatures in the area, all the seedlings were watered so they would not dry out after the planting. The drive will continue over the following weekends and it is planned that 20,000 new trees will be planted just in this one area.
As part of the “Boranka” project, education for elementary school students started this week. Expert scouts and representatives of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service, the State Protection and Rescue Directorate and firefighters, will educate elementary school students on the basics of afforestation, the protection of forests and nature, and fire prevention. The children will also be able to actively take part in the reforestation activities in order to be able to apply the acquired knowledge firsthand and help restore the forests.
The Association of Scouts of Croatia has launched the drive of voluntary reforestation activities on the destroyed areas of Dalmatia called “Boranka”. Thousands of volunteers will participate in the afforestation projects, including scouts from all over Croatia, numerous associations, institutions, companies, war veterans, hikers, sports clubs, firemen and interested citizens.
