December the 22nd, 2024 – The Croatian coast is full of ancient treasures just waiting to (usually accidentally) be stumbled upon. More underwater archaeological finds near Hvar have prompted a study.

As Morski writes, twenty very interesting underwater archaeological finds were come upon in the waters around the island of Hvar last year. All of them were eventually fully processed. Following the preparation of that professional study back in 2023, this year, the goal has been to record the seabed around the Kabal peninsula, which appears to hold ancient secrets.

Underwater archaeological research, or seabed exploration with side-scan sonar in the waters of Hvar, is now ongoing. As stated, the primary focus of this at the moment is the waters around the Kabal peninsula. This research is among first seabed searches of its kind to be carried out in the eastern Adriatic Sea. It was carried out by a company called Kantharos d.o.o., which deals with services in archaeology.

The archaeological research in the waters around this part of Hvar didn’t come up empty handed. Isolated finds were discovered that could represent solitary amphorae. This will likely be confirmed by future exploratory dives at the obtained positions.

Split-Dalmatia County was the body to co-finance this exciting project entitled “The multi-layer imaging (scanning) of the seabed of the Kabal peninsula”. It will work to unveil many more of Hvar’s long lost secrets hidden in the depths.
