Around the World with a Spoon and a Fork

Total Croatia News

…choose your destination and then pick a restaurant. Or vice versa.

As far as international restaurants in Zagreb are concerned, Chinese and Italian restaurants are the most numerous ones. They were also the first international cuisine venues that started opening in Zagreb some time ago. Next are those that offer Japanese and Mexican dishes, while in the last few years the offer has truly blossomed, reports Večernji List on June 22, 2016.

The path from Zagreb leads us straight to India, China, Sri Lanka, United States or Brazil. The means of transport – spoon, fork and knife. With their menus, but also with decoration and ambiance, international restaurants offer to their guests fantastic food coming from different areas around the world, together with the segments of these cultures, so it is not surprising that they are becoming increasingly popular.

While the international cuisine venues were initially considered almost too exotic, today many people want to taste the combinations of dishes with names that are sometimes impossible to pronounce. Waiters are often trying hard to explain all the unusual ingredients in these even more unusual dishes. However, many recipes, and definitely those extremely spicy, have been adapted to local tastes, but with an aim to preserve their authenticity. Let’s visit some of these fabulous places!

AUSTRIA – Wurst Bar brings Austrian specialties to the heart of Zagreb. This newly opened street food place in the Harmica Passage boasts great meat specialties – different kinds of sausages that are being served with sauerkraut.

LEBANON – A touch of the Orient in Croatia’s capital, Lebanese “Delicija Libanesi” serves national specialties like falafel, sujok, kibbeh and saudia, and on Saturdays there are oriental dance evenings.

RUSSIA – Russian restaurant “The Pushkin’s Office” opened earlier this year, and it cultivates that old-time Russian feel. On the menu, there are, among other things, borscht (a traditional soup made of beets), and stews made of deer, wild boar, mouflon and bear.

USA – Steak&Grill House at Hotel Dubrovnik offers popular American meat dishes that we have come to love. The popular New York stripsteak stands out, served with baked potato.

MACEDONIA – Restaurants Sveti Nikola and Merak are all about the Macedonian national cuisine. Vardar steak and veal medallions in three-pepper sauce are only some of the stars on the menu.

TURKEY – “Sultan sis durum” and “tavuk sis kebap” are specialties to be tasted at the restaurant Lokma Istanbul. Since 2012, Zagreb residents can enjoy authentic Turkish dishes and the inevitable coffee moments at this cosy place.

SRI LANKA – The menu of the restaurant located at Tkalčićeva Street 44 has been created by a chef who cooked for President Clinton. When preparing the food, the restaurant staff uses a wide and colourful assortment of spices and aromatic herbs. The famous one is the street specialty “kott”, made of chopped tortillas with meat and vegetables.

The list goes on and on, but we will pause here for now.
