The works have been nominated for the Grand Prize of the Croatian Design Society.
The selection committee of the Croatian Design 1718 exhibition has decided on the three nominations for the Grand Prize of the Croatian Design Society. The winner will be selected by an international jury and the decision will be announced at the opening of the exhibition on October 25 at the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb, announced the Croatian Design Society on September 19, 2018.
The selection committee of the exhibition includes Dejan Dragosavac Ruta, Boris Greiner, Vedran Kasap, Ana Labudović, Mario Lončarić, Nika Pavlinek and Tomislav Mostečak. The selection commission nominates three projects that have achieved noticeable effects and positive shifts in the social, cultural and economic context in the past two years, and the international jury will decide on the winner.
One of this year’s nominees is the book The Basics of Script Design by Frank E. Blokland and Nikola Đurek. The book was created in a collaboration of two different authors from different age groups, social contexts and typographical traditions – one from the Netherlands and the other from Croatia. The book is both a translation and an original. It started as a translation of the classic textbook of the Dutch typographic school, and it was upgraded and supplemented with the results of Đurek’s research in the typographical aspects of the Croatian language.
The “Small Arsenal Visitor Centre” has also been nominated, authored by Iva Letilović, Igor Pedišić and Vladimir Končar. The Small Arsenal is a protected monument of culture, part of the medieval Zadar fort, a separate fortification structure incorporated into the town wall system. After the conservation rehabilitation in 2017, the Arsenal has become a visitors centre and the starting point for exploring and visiting Zadar’s fortification system. The multimedia programme is included as a separate spatial element.
The third nominee is the Amarin Family Hotel, designed by Damir Gamulin. Spatial graphics and signalling of the Amarin Family Hotel are based on the idea that graphics and words as a communication layer of a family hotel should be directed to both adults and children, who perceive them in a different way than adults.
The Grand Prize of the Croatian Design Society is awarded to a project which, according to the international jury, is significantly better by its quality, innovation, complexity, or sending a clear and powerful message than the rest of the design production.
