Cafes in Croatia to Accept Poems for Coffee

Lauren Simmonds

Poetry will become accepted as a means of payment across a number of cafes in Croatia later this month.

Isn’t it awkward when you only have a 200kn note and want a 10kn coffee? Well, lack of loose change will no longer be a source of anxiety on March 21st 2016, when you can recite a poem in exchange for your caffeine fix.

Croatia will be one of over 20 countries partaking in what is known as the ”Julius Meinl pay with a poem initiative” to celebrate International Poetry Day on 21 March 2016. Free coffee will be served all day at more than 250 cafes in various locations around the country to those who are prepared to think up a poem, song, a set of lyrics or meaningful phrase written on a piece of paper.

This is the third year that Croatia has taken part in Julius Meinl’s International Poetry Project. To find out which cafes here in Croatia and elsewhere Europe will be involved, click here.

If you need caffeine to get your day going, and are also full of philosophical thoughts, this might just be up your street.
