Cardiovascular Diseases and Cancer Most Common Causes of Death

ZAGREB, September 21, 2018 – In 2017 a total of 53,477 people died in Croatia with the most common causes of death being cardiovascular diseases (23,500) and malignant diseases, which is the second most common cause of death with slightly less than 14,000 people dying of cancer last year.

The third most common cause of death among Croats were respiratory system diseases (3,139), followed by injuries and poisoning (2,694) and digestive system diseases (2,255), according to the Croatian Public Health Institute.

In 2017, not one single woman died during pregnancy, birth or postpartum complications.

According to gender, the number of women who died in 2017 is higher than the number of men, particularly in the age group of 65 and older, while the number of men who died in 2017 is higher in the age group of 64 and younger.

A total of 2,694 violent deaths were recorded in Croatia in 2017.
