NBA’s Goran Dragić lost his wallet in Murter, but he got it back thanks to an honest beach cleaner.
A worker of the Murtela municipal company in Murter Marin Piri is a proof that there are still honest people. Early in the morning he was cleaning a local beach, when he found a wallet full of money and credit cards, reports Index.hr on July 11, 2016.
“It was about 6.30 am. I was collecting garbage, and then I spotted a discarded wallet. I looked inside. I saw three or four different currencies, an identity card, several credit cards, a health insurance card, organ donor card… I put in my pocket and continued to clean the beach, and at the end of my shift I handed the wallet over to my management”, says Piri.
This is not the first wallet Piri found and returned to its owner. He therefore knows how tedious procedure sometimes is to find an owner. He was happy that in his company he had colleagues who did that job for him. “They have done everything else. They contacted the Basketball Federation of Slovenia which gave them the phone number. They called the owner and returned the wallet to him”, says Piri. The wallet belonged to Slovenian basketball player Goran Dragić, a member of the NBA team Miami Heat. “Well, then I received a surprise. Goran has left me an envelope, in which he put some money as a reward, his phone number and a message that he would like to meet me”, says Marin.
Dragić was delighted that there were still honest people such as Marin and wanted to meet him personally. Marin’s 12-year-old son Nino is a basketball player of a local club and it was a great honour for him to meet an NBA player. “Dragić was very pleased. He talked about all the problems he could have as a foreigner without a single document, no money, no credit cards… He signed a basketball for my son and gave a few autographs”, says Marin.
He did not reveal how much money Dragić left him, just saying that he was rewarded very generously. The municipal company is proud of its worker, as well as Mayor of Murter Toni Turčinov who says that he knows Piri so he was not surprised by his actions.
