American in Croatia: YouTuber Kaleigh Hendershot Leaving Croatia

We’ve written a few articles on American YouTuber Kaleigh Hendershot, the owner of the ”This Croatian Life” channel, which documented not only her life with her Croatian partner near Zagreb, but funny takes on Croatian customs, helpful advice, and amusing comparisons between Croatia and her native America. It seems however, that the bubbly Kaleigh has had enough.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes on the 12th of October, 2019, as she explained on YouTube, she is returning to America and will initially live in Seattle with a friend. Her Croatian husband Dominik is staying in Croatia for the time being, but she will try to bring him to America soon.

Kaleigh explains her relationship with Croatia as like that with a romantic partner, recalling how for the first year, everything is amazing and new, and then you realise how different you both are. She says she met some wonderful people and experienced good things, but that there was a lot that she did not like.

She describes her love for Croatia as intense, but that it had become a type of situation when the relationship starts to choke you, and you regress instead of moving forward. She said that it had taken her a lot of time to arrive to the decision to leave, and announced that she is flying to the United States on October the 22nd.

”I have often talked about differences between Croats and Americans, but what particularly bothers me is that in Croatia people are constantly expressing opinions on things that shouldn’t concern them. So often I heard myself being asked why I was eating something or why was I wearing that. There’s none of that in America, there we just let people be what they want to be. I no longer felt like I was me,” Kayleigh told Poslovni Dnevnik.

”Then there’s the inefficiency and the bureaucracy, and the people who have no motive to move forward. I also find it strange how long you wait in stores, because people are careless of others, so they often come with carts full of groceries to cash desks made for people only buying a few things. In general, I fear that Croats are distrustful of foreigners and anything different from them. They often laughed at me if I was eating food they were not used to, or preparing it in a different way,” Kaleigh pointed out, adding that everything was not so black. What she likes is that Croats uphold family values and that the country is much safer than America.

“Who knows, maybe I’ll be back, but I need a break for now,” Kayleigh said.
