Sub-zero termperatures on Croatia’s Adriatic coast have been accompanied by the fierce northern bura wind, which reached 216 km/h on Pag Bridge on January 7, 2016. A video appreciation of the bura from Lovre Peraic.
In all my travels to almost 100 countries, I have never experienced anything quite like the bura. A searing north wind which blows out all the cobwebs and more, and which adds a significant chill factor to its favourite haunt, the Adriatic. Catamarans – and sometimes ferries – are cancelled when the bura comes calling, and locals put on an extra twelve layers of clothing if they have to go outside.
And then, the following day, the bluest of skies, the calmest of seas, and crisp morning temperatures. Dalmatia at its finest.
For serious bura addicts, there is only one place to be when she is howling. Pag Most, where you could have enjoyed a 216 km/h wind a few days ago. Or even better, why not enjoy the excellent work of Lovre Peraic in the comfort of your warm home?
Brrr! I wonder if that word descends from bura…
