A look at the main New Year celebrations in Croatia.

Many Croatian cities and towns welcomed the New Year on their streets and squares. In Zagreb, local citizens and numerous tourists welcomed the New Year at Ban Jelačić Square, where the New Year was ushered in by Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandić. The celebrations were attended by thousands of revellers, and the mood was great thanks to favourable weather conditions with air temperature hovering around zero degrees Celsius. The revellers were entertained by Nina Badrić, Vatra and Teška Industrija, reports Index.hr on January 1, 2016.

The  New Year was welcomed at many other locations in Zagreb, which has been named this year as the best European Advent and Christmas destination according to the European Best Destinations website. In addition to Ban Jelačić Square, parties were organized at the Ice Park on King Tomislav Square, Zrinjevac and at European Square.

Several thousand citizens of Rijeka welcomed the new year on Korzo, entertained by musical acts Moskva and Neno Belan. They were greeted from the main stage by Rijeka Mayor Vojko Obersnel who wished everyone a happy new year, a lot of health, success, happiness and luck. “I hope Rijeka will remain a city of wise people”, said the Mayor.

New Year’s Eve celebrations at the Rijeka Korzo are traditionally the most visited in the area, but they were not the only outdoor celebrations in the Kvarner region. Many similar parties were organized in smaller towns, including a special traditional celebration of the New Year’s at noon, which has been organized in Fužine for years and was attended by several thousand people.

Several thousand citizens of Split and their guests gathered at the waterfront to welcome the New Year. The atmosphere was great thanks to musical groups Vertigo, TBF and Psihomodo Pop. Deputy Mayor Aida Batarelo wished everyone all the best in the new year.

Although the temperature in Split was quite low, that did not stop mostly young people to spend the New Year’s Eve by the sea and in the open. In addition to the waterfront, celebrations were organized at the neighbouring Prokurative as well.

People of Dubrovnik entered the New Year at Stradun with Severina, musical group Silente and DJ Kameni. The celebrations gathered a large number of local citizens and tourists. “I want to thank you for the successful 2015, when we achieved many things together. In 2016, we expect to meet many challenges, but our Dubrovnik will be a free and powerful city”, said Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahušić.

Similar celebrations took place on streets and squares in many other Croatian cities as well.
