The project is valued at 36.7 million kuna and 98 percent of the necessary funds were provided by the European Union from the operational programme “Regional Competitiveness”.

On the eve of the opening, the Mayor of Karlovac Damir Jelić visited the aquarium and said that this was a unique institution in Croatia which will present the richness of flora and fauna of Croatian and European rivers and lakes, which does not yet exist in the wider region.

“This is not surprising, considering the fact that no European country has such diverse and well-preserved rivers as Croatia. In addition, Karlovac, as a town of four rivers – Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and Dobra – is the right place for the presentation of the water resources we have”, said Jelić, adding that the towm and Karlovac County have invested a lot of effort in the project.

“The idea of constructing an aquarium is a result of the desire for transformation of our rich natural and cultural heritage, and especially the element of water, into a notable attraction. The importance of the aquarium as a unique town attraction is substantial not only for touristic development of the town of Karlovac, but it also represents the business opportunity for all the entrepreneurs involved in the project. Aquarium contributes to the achievement of the strategic goals of Karlovac. With the aquarium, the citizens of Karlovac will continue to live on rivers and with rivers in the heart of Croatia”, said the Mayor.
