Croatian creators of Saint Kotar say they were inspired by Broken Sword and Monkey Island.
Saint Kotar is a 2D point and click adventure which combines the best elements of classical old-school adventures with a gripping storyline interwoven with horror elements. What’s more, behind the game lie local creative minds, reports Glas Slavonije on July 2, 2016.
Croatian independent gaming studio Tanais Games developed a psychological horror game which takes place in a fictional town in Gorski Kotar area, and thus the name of the game – Saint Kotar. This lonely ancient place, isolated and hidden behind a vicious mountain peak still resembles a typical rural town with scenic views and a charming feel. But, as pointed out in an official description of the game, “Only on a closer glance this proud mining town starts showing its true nature, with many houses deserted and falling to ruin, dark foreboding forests and a ghastly scent of decay filling the air”. Meanwhile, amidst all the mystery, madness and fear they are encountered with, the protagonists have to fight not only against the unknown, but against themselves, too, in order to survive. This will ultimately lead them to vile truths related to their own past.
The inspiration for the game came from the “Broken Sword” and “Monkey Island” series (the latter brings endless hours of tense adventures). Developers were also influenced by the horror fiction authors such as H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe. In addition to a distinctive style of drawing, which is certainly eye-pleasing and beautiful, the game will also have recorded dialogues and a truly creepy soundtrack that will further enliven this little rural place where time has stopped. Saint Kotar is expected during 2017 for Windows, Mac and Linux. The development of the game can be followed on the studio’s official Facebook and Twitter profiles, as well as on their website.
Meanwhile, the creators say on their blog that they might launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund further development. They added that Saint Kotar will have a default English language (text + voice), and it will be localized in German, Italian and Spanish at release (only text).
