A rather special Advent celebration.
On the first Sunday of the Advent, the town of Šibenik lit the first candle of its unique Advent wreath. The candle was lighted in the form of a blue laser beam from one of the towers of the oldest town fortress St. Michael, reports Jutarnji List on December 4, 2017.
For the next three Sundays, the remaining three towers of the medieval fortress will also send laser beams towards the sky. On the Christmas Eve, which is also the last Advent Sunday this year, all four towers will be lit and in that way create undoubtedly the most original and the largest Advent wreath not just in Croatia, but in the world.
Also on the Christmas Eve, thousands of lanterns will be released from the main town square Poljane, with messages of peace, joy, hope and love.
The first Advent “candle”, or rather laser beams, were turned on by Šibenik Mayor Željko Burić, who gave the signal from the Barona fortress, where hundreds of citizens of Šibenik gathered. The beginning of the Christmas period was also marked by the Kolo singing society, which performed traditional spiritual songs.
“All towns have their own Advents and Advent wreaths, but this one is the best and most special. May this Advent lighten up each and every one of us,” said Burić.
The traditional Adventura festival, organised by the town authorities and the local tourist board, will start on Wednesday. Locals and visitors will be able to enjoy gastronomic offer and musical programme. The first concert in the series will be performed by the favorite TBF band from Split.
