ZAGREB, March 18, 2018 – About 30 houses were flooded in the Kosinj Valley, Perušić municipality, in the central Lika-Senj County, but local residents were being assisted and power generators were delivered to five settlements that were left without power, Hina learned at the civil protection centre in Perušić.
The level of the River Lika, which runs through the Kosinj Valley, has gone up by half a metre in the last 24 hours.
The head of the local civil protection centre, Mihael Kurteš, said that some 60 people were helping residents whose houses had been flooded or were at risk of being flooded in Donji Kosinj, Gornji Kosinj, Selište and Lipovo Polje.
Even though the water level in the flooded houses ranges from several centimetres to half a metre, nobody has been evacuated because people want to stay in their homes or have moved to their friends’ or relatives’ houses that have not been flooded, Kurteš said.
Medical teams were visiting households with people in need of medical help. Food and other necessities for some 600 people are delivered twice a week.
Kurteš said that problems with floods had been going on for six days and that the water level in the Kosinj Valley was expected to reach its maximum on Wednesday. A police team and a team of the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service have been helping local residents as well.
In another part of the country – the Sava River Valley at Jasenovac near Sisak (around 100 kilometres southeast of Zagreb) – the level of the Sava at 1 pm on Sunday was 799 centimetres, one centimeter short of the level that requires declaring an emergency situation.
A session of the local rescue and protection centre in Sisak-Moslavina County was called for later in the afternoon, when flood protection measures would be introduced for several settlements at risk of being flooded.
Members of the Croatian Army were on the ground at Trebež, the settlement most threatened by floods, putting up sandbag dikes to protect family houses.
