M.I.A. is coming to Croatia for the first time, not to perform her hit songs, but to talk about art and global issues.
The first guest of the long-awaited new season of the Philosophical Theatre programme at the Croatian National Theater (HNK) in Zagreb is the world-famous rapper M.I.A., who will make an appearance on November 19, reports Muzika.hr on November 8, 2017.
Philosophical Theatre is a programme at Croatian National Theatre aiming to re-establish theatre as a public space where issues and ideas are freely discussed by holding debates once a month, not just about philosophy and theatre but about many other topics and burning global issues. The Philosophical Theatre has so far welcomed such names as Vanessa Redgrave, Slavoj Žižek, Yanis Varoufakis, Thomas Piketty, Julia Christie and many others.
This season starts off with the guest performance of Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, better known by her stage name M.I.A. The British rapper of Sri Lankan Tamil origin has attracted attention with her provocative music videos, distinctive style of hip-hop and her live performances as well as activism and art. Time magazine has even named her as one of the most influential people in the world, and she still holds the record as the only performer nominated for Oscar, Grammy and Mercury Prize at the same time.
Commenting on the fact that Zagreb’s HNK will host such star of her profile, editor of the Philosopher’s Theatre Srećko Horvat says: “Since the launch of the Philosophical Theater, we have announced that we will always try and think outside the box by selecting unconventional topics and guests. And if there is such an artist who is unconventional and outside-the-box, then it is definitely M.I.A. This will be her first time coming to Croatia and I am very pleased that her guest appearance will open the new season of the Philosophical Theatre. Seeing that popular regional music festivals haven’t been able to bring M.I.A., I strongly suggest you hurry up and get the tickets.”
