As refugees continue to arrive, everyone in Croatia is lending a helping hand
Ana Laura Kapetanović, 25 year old from Osijek may have modeled for some of the most renowned photographers in the world and graced the covers of Elle, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan, but when it came to choosing between the fashion runways and helping out the refugees in Opatovac, Croatia, she chose the far less glamorous, but much more rewarding option.
She was recognised by the team from Slobodna Dalmacija as she was going through piles of used clothes to help sort them before they are given to the refugees and was asked to comment on the situation: “I heard people here needed help. I have two arms and all the time in the world, besides, we’ve all been in a similar situation around here” .
“I got together with some friends on Facebook, we’re here every day and we stay through the night, because that’s then they need us the most. All the people I encounter are so humble, friendly and grateful. I offered a pair of baby sneakers to one man so he could pass them on to someone else since they didn’t fit his child, but he politely declined” Ana Laura continued.
Even though she was already supposed to be on a photo shoot in London, she decided to postpone the trip for one very important reason “I want to help, at least a little, in this chaos. I see myself in these little kids”.
