Palestinian Doctor Captures the Hearts of Croatian Patients

The most popular doctor in the town often sees more than a hundred patients a day.

One of the most sought-after physicians in the region is Mustafa Husein, who examines up to 130 patients a day in his clinic in Grubišno Polje. He has registered as many as 2,130 patients in total. This doctor’s story started back in the 1970s when, as a young man in Palestine, he decided to study medicine. Due to political differences, he could not do it in his homeland, reports lokalni.hr on February 14, 2018.

“I decided to visit various embassies to find a place where I would fulfil my wish and enrol in a medical school. I encountered so many problems that at one point I even gave up. I wandered around the town when I saw an embassy whose flag I did not recognise. I decided to enter it, and the rest is history,” says Dr Husein. This was, of course, the flag of the former Yugoslavia, which urgently gave Mustafa a visa.

Among all the cities where he could study medicine, he chose Zagreb. After he completed the studies, he started looking for a job at any clinic away from Zagreb. He finally ended up in Grubišno Polje, where Dr Husein, despite many offers to move abroad, has been treating the inhabitants for the past three decades.

In addition to citizens of Grubišno Polje, he is also often visited by people from Bjelovar, Virovitica, Daruvar and even Zagreb, since there are many patients who did not want to change their family physician after moving to the capital. “I have a lot of work. Days when I examine just a hundred patients are a holiday to me, since I can take a short break;” says Dr. Husein, who has never made a single wrong diagnosis in his long career, not even during the Homeland War, when he closed his office so he could provide medical help where it was more needed.

As one of his most significant cases, he cites a rapid reaction and diagnosis in the case of a girl who had meningococcal sepsis, and whose life he managed to save. “It is important to get the exact diagnosis as soon as possible, and I really do the best I can. I know my regular patients so well that five minutes with them is enough. It is difficult to be a doctor today. Patients used to be our only concern, but now I take care of everything: documents, equipment, storage facility and the like. I often bring work home in the evening,” says Husein.

He has no plans to move back to Palestine. “I tried to return to Palestine with my family once before. I had a job waiting for me, but strict regulations did not allow my family to stay, but me alone. We had to choose: we could return, or have them leave the state every three months. That is why we came back and settled in beautiful Grubišno Polje,” he says.
