The 11th edition of the festival starts on May 4 in Rovinj

Submissions for the International Competition of Contemporary Photography – 11th Rovinj Photodays 2018 closed on January 31. The organisers have since reported they were amazed by the quantity of submitted work: more than 12.000 photographs came in from a total of 46 countries, making 2018 a record year for the biggest photography festival in Southeast Europe.

The contestants had seven themed categories to choose from: Architecture, Fashion, Landscape, Portrait, Body, Documentary, and Artistic concept. The last was the only category which called for a series of 8-16 photos, purposely created to be exhibited in a museum or gallery.

All submitted photos have been sent to a judging panel for a two-tier selection process. A panel of national selectors will choose a total of five best submissions in each category by the end of February, and then pass them on to the head selector who will decide on the winners in their respective categories. This year, the festival’s head selector is art historian and curator Gabriella Uhl.

Winners in individual categories will be presented with Kadar awards at the official ceremony on May 5, 2018. Three of the best submissions in each category will also get presented to the public at a traveling exhibition, in a festival catalogue, and on the official website of Rovinj Photodays.

After the second round of the selection process, the head selector will decide on the main festival winner who will be granted the Grand Prix award and a chance to show their work at a solo exhibition in the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb later this autumn.

The upcoming festival will feature around fifteen exhibitions and several workshops and lectures, starting from May 4.
