The story of Međugorje continues to spread throughout the world.
The town of Rojales, located 35 kilometres from the coastal town of Alicante in the south of Spain, has placed on one of its squares a statue of Our Lady of Međugorje after a Spanish couple returned from Međugorje in July with their prayers answered, reports Index.hr on March 24, 2016.
“This will be a place of peace and reflection. But, above all, we want for as many people as possible to meet Our Lady of Međugorje, so that she can change their lives for the better as it happened to me when I visited Međugorje”, said Maria Gonzalez which launched the initiative for the statue to be built and is one of over 18,000 inhabitants of Rojales.
The statue is a replica of the original statue from the Herzegovinian shrine. It is 1.60 metres tall and made of the same stone. It was recently brought to Spain. “When I came back in July, all of my problems were gone. It was a miracle”, says Gonzalez speaking in her town which is just two kilometres away from the Mediterranean Sea.
On the square where the statue was placed there is also a postal box for written petitions, a plaque with the text of Psalm 23 and the words “The Lord is My Shepherd”, and a blue metal cross which is two metres tall. Rojales, whose mayor is Antonio Perez Garcia, a member of the Socialist Workers Party of Spain, has become the first place in Spain with an area dedicated to Our Lady of Međugorje.
On 24 June 1981, six young people from Međugorje told a story about the apparitions of Virgin Mary at a local hill. After the reports of apparitions were repeated, Međugorje became one of the most famous Marian shrines in the world. “Strong faith of its inhabitants, as they say there, is the reason why Virgin Mary appeared right there”, says Gonzalez.
