The Sinj Alka will take place on 6 May in Vukovar.
Mayor of Vukovar Ivan Penava and president of the Society of Knights of the Sinj Alka Stipe Jukić signed on Saturday in Vukovar a charter on the organization of a special Sinj Alka in Vukovar, which will be only the fourth time in the long history of Alka that a competition will take place in a town other then Sinj, reports Večernji List on February 11, 2017.
“I think we have realized a dream of many for the Sinj Alka to take place in Vukovar. This event will be recorded in history and we are honoured by the decision of the Society of Knights of the Sinj Alka. This is a testament to the values which are maintained in Sinj, the Cetina region and by the Society of Knights, towards the town of Vukovar and the Homeland War”, said Mayor Penava after the signing of the charter. The special Alka will take place on 6 May, at a special venue which will be constructed at the Županijska Street, said Penava.
President of the Society of Knights of the Sinj Alka Stipe Jukić said that, although it is a highly demanding event in terms of organization, there is no doubt that the competition in Vukovar would be held at the highest possible level.
“People of Sinj have been thinking for a long time about organizing the Sinj Alka in Vukovar, and we are now extremely proud that the special Alka competition will be run in Vukovar. This is only the fourth time that the Sinj Alka will be held in a town other than Sinj, but this will be the first time that such a decision was made by the people, and not by politicians”, said Jukić. The previous three occasions when Alka was run in other towns were in 1832 (Split), 1922 (Belgrade), and 1946 (Zagreb).
The commander of the Alka knights, Duke Ante Vučić, pointed out that the special Alka in Vukovar would be dedicated to all those who had defended Vukovar from Serbian aggression and died for Vukovar during the Homeland War, as well as for all the missing Croatian soldiers and civilians.
