November the 17th, 2024 – Split Advent 2024 is just around the corner, promising Mediterranean warmth alongside the Christmas spirit during the coldest part of the year.
Few associate Split with anything but the scorching Dalmatian sun. Summer sees the crowds descend upon Croatia’s second largest city, before dispersing on ferries heading for the Central Dalmatian islands that lie nearby. Diocletian’s Palace becomes a stone baking oven under the harsh rays, and visitors refresh themselves in the alluring azure of the Adriatic Sea. None of that really lends itself to Santa, snowy vistas and gloves.
Christmas in Split? Until recently, the very notion sounded a bit odd. Christmas anywhere in the Mediterranean wasn’t really on the radar of anyone who isn’t from there. Croatia’s tourist season is extending, however, with many Croatian cities putting on great advent celebrations, following Zagreb’s award winning example.
Split Advent 2024 is promising to be a hit for all who pay it a visit. The classic Croatian “i tebi i tvojima” (to you and yours, too) is the slogan for this year’s event which sees the Riva’s palm trees lit up with strings of lights.
As Morski writes, Mayor Ivica Puljak and the rest of Split’s city administration recently presented a diverse Split Advent 2024 programme that will bring the magic of Christmas to the Dalmatian capital.
Puljak emphasised the importance of togetherness and invaluable family moments, which are the backbone of this year’s Advent in Split schedule.
“Instead of copying Advent concepts from the continental part of the country, with cold evenings and mulled wine, Split Advent is set to celebrate the sun and outdoor gatherings. The city will be richly decorated – and special things to note will be the Advent wreath on Peristyle and the festively lit Diocletian’s Cellars. We have a varied concert programme and for the first time, we’re going to have a special Children’s Advent. I’m sure that this Split Advent 2024 will be a hit and I’d therefore like to invite everyone to come out and enjoy it together,” concluded Puljak.
It was also stated that Split Advent 2024’s brand was designed in collaboration with Goran Šoš from Split.
“We imagined Advent in Split as having a warm, pleasant, caring character, very similar to a typical Dalmatian mother, who takes care of everyone, but has a measure,” it was said. Croatian designers Goran Šoš and Natko Stipaničev were then thanked for their contribution in creating a concept that depicts Split as it is it really is – a picture of the city, the Riva, the square and socialising with neighbours.
The Split Advent 2024 programme can be found here, and it’s worth bookmarking it if you’re planning to visit, as updates will continue being made to the schedule.
Concerts and special programmes across several inner city locations have been designed for different generations, with a variety of musical genres and performers to enjoy. Split’s Children’s Advent occupies a special place in the programme, and the youngest visitors will be able to enjoy all kinds of workshops, performances and events adapted to their wishes – thus creating their first Christmas memories in the city.
The overall message for Split Advent 2024 is that it will be warm and special for both residents and guests of Split alike.
