The search for the lost aircraft has been going on since the end of World War II

The bottom of the Adriatic Sea is home to plenty of sunken aircraft that are still waiting for someone to discover them. One such case comes our way from the waters of Vis island, where a military aircraft met its untimely end in World War II, reported HRT.

Close to the end of WWII, an American warplane crashed off the coast of Vis as it was trying to land at the military base on the island, having suffered considerable battle damage. Three of the ten people on board died on impact. The search for the lost aircraft has been going on ever since the end of the war; now, the wreckage has finally been located owing to joint efforts of archaeologists, divers and the Croatian Navy.

The latest stage of the search started in June 2017, taking the experts to a depth of some 50 metres. Now that the aircraft wreckage has been found, the remnants of the warplane will be subjected to further research, and the remains of the deceased returned to their families.

So far, more than 30 sunken aircraft have been found in the waters of Vis. You can see the footage of the latest uncovered wreckage here
