A crowdfunding campaign is off to a good start for a Croatian duo who are looking to drive their Tesla where no electric vehicle has gone before
Two Croatian friends, Saša Cvetojević and Oleg Maštruko, are preparing to embark on an adventure which will hopefully break electric vehicle records and guarantee them some good adventure and fun. They plan to join the Budapest-Bamako Rally in January of 2018 driving their electric Tesla vehicle, a feat which, to the best of their knowledge, no one has attempted yet.
Saša is an entrepreneur, investor and electric vehicle enthusiast, while Oleg is an author, travel writer and IT media editor.
Budapest-Bamako, known often as the Bamako Rally, is the largest amateur rally competition in the world, created to make the Dakar Rally accessible to ‘ordinary’ people. The finish is not always in the same place – the 2018 edition will finish in Banjul in Gambia.
The electric vehicle infrastructure is quite solid within the EU, but once on the African continent things change drastically. The route will take them through ‘normal’ roads and countries from Hungary to Spain, then Morocco, West Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia, which are in the sense of electric vehicle infrastructure partly lottery, partly hell…
To solve charging issues, they will bring a generator. It does seem bizarre to carry a gasoline engine in an electric vehicle, but the idea is to have it in reserve in case the energy situation becomes hairy. After reaching the finish in Banjul, the Tesla will return via ship to the port of Rijeka, while the generator will be a gift to a local village.
Although an amateur rally, participation costs are high. The only amateur portion of it are the drivers. Their Indiegogo campaign will not cover all their costs, which are far higher. Finances will come from three sources – personal, crowdfunding and sponsors. The crowdfunding campaign will end in the beginning of December and you can follow the duo via Facebook and other media where they will publish images, stories and news from the Team Tesla Powered by RWE.
