A peculiar guest was spotted in town on Halloween night
We reported multiple sightings of wild bears in the last couple of months. A momma bear and two cubs were spotted on a hill next to the highway in Gorski kotar; three cubs were caught on film while running along the highway near Bakar.
Bears in the wild might make for a delight-inducing sight when one is at a safe distance. Three cubs on a run are not a frequent occurrence, but present no danger when not accompanied by their protective mother. However, the latest sighting makes for a bit more nerve-wrecking occasion: on the night of October 31, 2017, a wild bear was spotted on the streets of Crikvenica.
Coming home after a night out and being met with a bear strolling past your house would make anyone stop dead in their tracks. Citizens are advised to stay cautious – wild animals who are looking for food tend to behave unpredictably, and are even known to attack if they sense they are in danger.
This is not the first time a wild animal has been spotted in Crikvenica. A few weeks ago, a wild boar walked into the courtyard of the kindergarten Radost; the facility in question is located in the city centre, 20 metres away from the coastline. The hunters of Crikvenica took care of the animal and no children were harmed, but the incident is only one in a line of frequent sightings of wild animals in urban areas.
Wildlife experts consider this as evidence of the animals’ natural habitat getting increasingly endangered in multiple ways, mostly by human interventions. Driven out of their habitats, boars, foxes and bears end up wandering around populated areas, searching for food.
The bear spotted in Crikvenica didn’t cause any damage to people or property, and according to the comments posted on Facebook, the local population found the occasion to be more delightful than worrisome. “This is a local – don’t touch him, and he won’t touch you”, says one comment; others were amused by the idea of the bear going out for a night cap. After all, it was Halloween night, and this particular visitor takes away the award for the best costume of them all.
