A physician who cares about more than just his patients.

The daily schedule of gynaecologist Danijel Bursać is always the same: after his shift at a Zagreb hospital, he goes to a gym where he trains children with Down’s syndrome free of charge. And he has been doing this for the last three years, ever since the project he developed during his medical studies came to life, reports Index.hr on August 4, 2018.

“I was involved in sports and realised that taekwondo exercises can help children with special needs, make their everyday life easier and help them rehabilitate,” explains Bursać, who has gathered a team of experts working with him.

They also organise training sessions for children without proper parental care and those from poor families. “The aim is to show the children that they are all equally valuable. By participating in the sports, in addition to gaining health, they develop numerous social skills and find new friends,” says Bursać.

In addition to the children with special needs, other groups are also interested in participating in the training session. Just how successful the club has been is best demonstrated by Senada, who after just eight months of training became the first European Champion in para-taekwondo.

“The interest has been so large that the old gym became too small for us and now we have finally rented a new gym at the Jarun neighbourhood from the city authorities. Unfortunately, it is not fit for purpose, it is too old and we must renovate it,” said Bursać.

Part of the necessary works will be performed by volunteers themselves, but without the help of other good people, they will not be able to do everything. “Every help is welcome. We need construction material, sanitary equipment, all that is necessary. We also welcome sponsorships and donations,” added Bursać.
