Rowing Regatta in traditional pasara boats was held at Mali Lošinj on Saturday, September 2nd, as part of the ‘Lošinj Sails Around the World’ festival.
The guests from Zagreb, Vladimir Danon and Radovan Radonić, are the overall winners of the fifth Pasara Regatta, featuring the island’s traditional wooden rowing boats, held on Saturday morning in the port of Mali Lošinj, reports Morski.hr on September 5, 2017.
Interestingly, they were the only participants who weren’t from the region. They found out about the regatta on their sailing trip to Lošinj last year, and have decided to take part this year. Eight rowers competed in the single race riding boats up to 4.3 metres in length, and six two-man crews competed riding boats over 4.3 metres in length. The rowing took place firstly in the smaller pasara boats, then in bigger pasaras. Afterwards, two best individuals and two best two-man crews competed in the finals. The approximately 900-metre-long race had a start and finish line by the pontoon closest to the town square and with a buoy as a turnaround point located in front of Vela Riva.
The winner in the individual selection of the regatta was the oldest participant Stjepan Vuljan, who came before Zoran Kukavica and third-placed Đanin Saganić. Out of all two-man crews competing in the regatta, Danon and Radonić were the fastest, faster than the family from Lošinj – father Mladen and son Tihomir Kuljanić, who came in second, while the third place was won by Josip Magašić and Ivan Jerman from Veli Lošinj. In the final race, held just before the storm started, Danon and Radonić were again the fastest crew.
Just before the regatta started, the opening ceremony of the month-long festival titled ‘Lošinj Sails Around the World’ was held at the main square in Lošinj. The rowing regatta was organised by the Seamen’s Club Lošinj. Led by the Brass Orchestra “Josip Kašman”, the rowers were propagated along the Waterfront of the Lošinj Captains.
