November the 14th, 2025 – The much anticipated construction of a 160 million euro expressway to Požega has begun, with the Chinese CRBC responsible for building it.

As Poslovni Dnevnik/VL/Vedran Balen writes, the construction of the expressway from Požeški Brestovac to the Godinjak junction has finally begun. The move should bring Požega out of its awkward level of traffic isolation after a wait of several decades. It is being referred to by those involved as the “project of all projects” in Požega, and it will result in a brand new, major traffic artery that will connect it to the A3 motorway.

The value of the contracted works for the construction of the 14.75-kilometre-long expressway, one of the most significant infrastructure projects in all of Požega-Slavonia County, stands at 159.8 million euros (excluding VAT), and the contractor is the renowned Chinese company China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The estimated completion date is expected to be 48 months as things currently stand.

The introduction of the contractor to the job was also attended by the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković. He stressed that the construction of the almost 160 million euro expressway to Požega represents a huge and valuable project for Croatian road construction and for Požega-Slavonia County, which will finally get to enjoy a better connection to the motorway system as a result.

“This is the largest single project for Croatian Roads (Hrvatske ceste) after the construction of Pelješac Bridge. We’ve got a contractor who has already engaged in construction here in Croatia, and no less than Pelješac Bridge itself. The construction is technically very complex, since it includes a tunnel, there are many bridges and viaducts. That said, the projects are well prepared and I believe that everything will be completed within four years. We’re building a lot of new road infrastructure across Croatia and at the moment, the construction of expressways is our main priority, especially in the continental part of the country,” revealed Butković.

HC Board President Ivica Budimir was there to formally present the project, its importance and the implementation phases. “The route is a demanding one, but with good cooperation with the contractor, we believe that everything will be completed within the agreed deadlines. This section of expressway, together with the other one that is currently being prepared, will significantly shorten the journey. We also expect increased traffic activity towards Našice, since this will be the shortest route to the motorway,” said Budimir.

The construction of the almost 160 million euro expressway to Požega will create the prerequisites for a faster and safer connection of that entire eastern region with the A3 motorway and the rest of Croatia. It will therefore very significantly improve traffic accessibility as a whole and actively encourage the further economic development of that part of Croatia.
