In 2017, a record breaking 17,200 wines were submitted for the Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) competition.
Many Croatian winemakers decided to submit their wines, encouraged by the recent successes of other Croatian wines, including two Platinum medals awarded to Croatian wines last year (Veralda’s Istrian and Iločki Podrumi Traminac Izborna Berba managed to achieve the very prestigious title).
This year’s results are even more spectacular! Although not yet officially announced by Decanter itself on their website, the judging has been completed and the wineries have received the results, and most of them were not able to contain their excitement and wait for the official results, so we know that the rumours about Croatian wines receiving 7 Gold medals in DWWA 2017 tasting and scoring were true, and 3 of them were then awarded the most prestigious Platinum medals.
Those three are: Benvenuti Teran 2013, which received 95 points and was given the Platinum Best in Category title, Jakopić Izborna Berba Prosušenih Bobica Graševina 2015 (select harvest of the dried berries) was given the Platinum medal as Best Croatian Sweet, and Antunović Winery Premium Graševina 2015 was also awarded a Platinum Best in Category medal. Additionally, Benvenuti winery has also won an International gold award at the IWC competition (the other gold at IWC this year was awarded to Kozlović Teran 2016), so 2017 is a really big year for Benvenuti winery.
Four other Gold medals were awarded to Croatian wines: PP Orahovica Jezerac Zeleni Silvanac 2015, Fakin La Prima Malvazija 2015, Franković Luna d’oro Muškat Momjanski 2015 and Mario Banko Malvazija 2016.
As we already said, Decanter has not officially published the results of this year’s rating, but unofficially, Croatian wines were able to secure another twenty something Silver medals, and even more Bronzes. We don’t have the comprehensive list yet, but here’s what we’ve been able to collect on social media and winemaker’s websites:
[SILVER] PP Orahovica, Zeleni Silvanac 2015, PP Orahovica, Izborna Berba Zeleni Silvanac 2016, Kolar Zeleni Silvanac 2015, Domaine Kocquelicot, Belaigra, Kutjevo Premium Graševina 2016, Kutjevo Winery De Gotho Graševina 2016, Franković Winery, Korona Malvazija 2015
[Bronze] Štampar Winery, Sauvignon, 2016, Feravino (two different Graševina wines from 2016 each won a medal), Domaine Kocquelicot Kontempo
We will add more wines to this list as more become known, and for now we congratulate all Croatian winemakers who won medals at DWWA 2017!
