November the 26th, 2025 – There are set to be 70 brand new trains worth a total of 360 million euros running on Croatian tracks by the end of 2025.
As Poslovni Dnevnik/Zrinka Gabelica Toplek writes, the “Via Vita” Croatian Road and Railway Association opened its 12th congress in Rovinj on Monday, entitled “Infrastructure at the Crossroads of Development”. The gathering brought together an impressive 400 representatives of road and railway companies, contractors, designers, transport experts and other stakeholders from across the sector. The aim was to exchange experiences and reflect on the future of the entire transport sector, with an emphasis placed primarily on connecting the profession and developing the transport policy for Croatia.
70 new trains on croatian tracks by the end of 2025
State Secretary at the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Tomislav Mihotić, stressed that the goal of all transport projects is to establish connectivity, safety and balanced development of Croatia and that railways are an absolute priority. “A system without stops, with contactless payment methods and shorter travel times will be a major technological breakthrough and a qualitative change for millions of users across Croatia,” he stressed.
Mihotić announced an enormous investment totalling six billion euros in railway infrastructure in the next decade, calling it “an investment wave that Croatia hasn’t had for decades.” “Investments in railway infrastructure will be accompanied by investments in rolling stock, meaning that a total of 70 new trains worth 360 million euros will be on Croatian tracks by the end of 2025,” assured the State Secretary.
a look at road infrastructure
In terms of road infrastructure, Mihotić praised the recent introduction of contractors to one of the largest projects to date – the expressway that will connect Požega with the motorway, worth 160 million euros. There’s also the intensive construction of the Podravina Y and part of the expressway from Varaždin to Krapina. The key year for motorways in Croatia will occur in 2027, when the full profile of the Istrian Y is scheduled to be completed and a new model of electronic toll collection will be introduced across Croatia.
The President of the Croatian Roads and Railways Association and the President of the Management Board of Croatian Roads (Hrvatske ceste), Ivica Budimir, emphasised the growth and development of transport infrastructure is currently going at a faster pace than ever. He noted that the goal of “Via Vita” is to accelerate all implementation processes, from preparation and regulations to implementation. Budimir also underlined the fact that large infrastructure projects, vehicle modernisation and digitalisation are all a large part of a shared vision for creating a modern, efficient and sustainable transport system that will make Croatia more competitive, safer and more connected.
