Newly re-elected Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic offers his suggestions when it comes to the renaming of the controversial Marshal Tito Square.
Marshal Tito Square, formerly Kazalisni Trg (Theatre Square) has been the subject of controversy and debate for many years. It seems Milan Bandic, long-time (and newly re-elected) Zagreb Mayor is making steps forward when it comes to listening to the concerns of those who feel that Josip Broz Tito, much like any other totalitarian figure of any regime, has no place in modern society or in the 21st century psyche of a supposedly forward-thinking, democratic European Union member state.
As Vecernji List reports on the 26th of June, 2017, Bandic proposed that the square be renamed to the Square of the Republic of Croatia at a press conference today in the capital.
”My proposal at the first session of the Assembly will be that this square is renamed Trg Republike Hrvatske (Square of the Republic of Croatia)” said Bandic, adding that he has taken note of protests about the square from both sides of the debate over the years. “I insisted and thought that there was enough reason there for the people to go to a referendum [on the subject of renaming the square]”
The square is otherwise one of the biggest squares in Zagreb.
