April the 4th, 2025 – The largest bus station in Kvarner is soon set to open its doors in the city that flows, Rijeka. It will provide much more than just a new transport hub.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, according to the investor, the project involving the largest bus station in Kvarner involves not only modern transport infrastructure, but also green areas that will enrich the urban space in Rijeka. In addition to transforming the very central part of the city, this brand new transport complex includes innovative solutions for environmental protection, among which the “green garage” stands out as the very first of its kind in all of Croatia, according to Rijeka danas/today.

The construction of the largest bus station in Kvarner in the City of Rijeka will bring with it multiple changes. The project is otherwise being carried out as part of the much wider Zapadna Žabica project. The green components of the new largest bus station in Kvarner will improve the urban image of the Rijeka as a whole. Although the project required the removal of several cypress trees along the railway line at the underpass on Brajda, the Best in Parking company took responsibility for compensating for this green loss. In agreement with the City of Rijeka, the company planted 40 more trees along the Rujevica-Marinići road.

The aforementioned Zapadna Žabica project won’t only bring changes to the external space, as it also includes unique solutions for greening within the complex itself. The future bus station will be designed according to the principles of sustainability, with a special emphasis placed on green roofs and greening the garage, which is a solution that isn’t very common in Croatia. Inside the garage, cars will drive along green walls, and the natural light entering the space will ensure that the feeling of being trapped inside a concrete structure, as is so common in garages, is lost.

In addition to green areas on the roofs and along the southern edges of the building, the project also includes a city public space. That new area will become a space for walking and relaxing. New walkways, both indoor and outdoor, will be enriched with low and high greenery, which will create a pleasant environment for locals and visitors alike. Through this project, Rijeka will be further connected to nature, creating a space that allows for the smoother and greater integration of green and urban areas.

The Zapadna Žabica project is being implemented according to the Detailed Development Plan (DPU) adopted way back in 2007. The plan includes important traffic and urban solutions. Through this investment, Rijeka will not only get a brand new, large and modern bus station, but also a large pedestrian zone that will connect the city centre with the coast, creating a totally new view of the city.

The construction of the new bus terminal also includes the reorganisation of traffic, removing static traffic on the waterfront. In this way, a new urban zone will be formed. Krešimirova Ulica (Street), as one of the most important city arteries, will be highlighted as part of the main facade of the future bus station.
